Retro Blue Jays – That OTHER time Mitch Williams gave up a walk-off home run

Posted by AllDayBlueJays.

Mention Mitch ‘Wild Thing’ Williams to any Jays fan and visions of Joe Carter’s World Series winning blast will immediately come to mind.

However, Williams’ infamous performance in game six of the 1993 World Series was not the first time he gave up a walk-off homer to the Blue Jays.

Five years earlier, Williams – pitching for the Texas Rangers at the time – stepped on the mound at Exhibition Stadium, hoping to get a save and secure victory for his team. It was September 4, 1988.

As the Baseball-Reference.com boxscore and PxP indicate, the Rangers took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th, only to watch the Jays score five runs and make it a one-run ballgame. Texas would then add a run in the top of the 9th.

This set the stage for the dramatic conclusion.

After Texas starter Bobby Witt allowed the first two batters to reach base, Williams was brought in and promptly gave up a bunt single to Lloyd Moseby, loading the bases. Williams struck out pinch hitter Pat Borders and then faced George Bell, who sent a 1-0 pitch into the left field seats, giving the Jays a 9-7 win.

Check out the low-key celebration that greeted Bell. I guess the players weren’t as ramped up in the 80s as they are today. Though it is nice to see BJ Birdy pull off a celebratory cartwheel.
