First Round, 22nd Pick

September 17, 2018

Man on the radio,
I’m driving while the city sleeps.
Tell me about the new draft pick.

He’s from Medford and runs with a proverb:
Height doesn’t measure heart.
It gives him a chip on his shoulder and
the meaning of life.
His life.

Man on the radio,
What’s the kid’s story?

Imagine being told you’re too small.
He got angry and
worked to prove everyone wrong,
using a fastball, slider and confidence.

Man on the radio,
what does his future look like?

He will tear his anterior cruciate ligament, but recover faster than anyone else.
He will help his team to the promised land after a 22-year odyssey.
He will earn a degree and several playoff starts.
He will win gold for his country.
He will build a fashion empire and maintain a mansion.
He will have ups and downs.
He will face adversity and a recurring blister.
He will energize the fan base.

You might be turned off by his bravado,
but baseball isn’t fun without character.
His character.

Man on the radio,
How will it all end?

Let the story play out.
Let the story play out.

WBC predictions (which are really just guesses) and five things I’ve loved about this year’s tournament

March 20, 2017

So I’m thinking…

Puerto Rico over Netherlands
USA over Japan

I’m likely wrong about the American/Japanese match. But it is a one-game playoff where anything can happen. Sounds enticing to me.

And now, five things:

  1. The passion of the Latin American players. Modesty be damned.
  2. Team Israel’s exciting run. Did not see that one coming!
  3. Jose Bautista’s throw from LF in the DR/Colombia match and the crazy aftermath. Not the first time Joey Bats sent a stadium full of people into bedlam. The only thing missing was commentary from Jim Ross.
  4. Eric Gagne’s 2.1 scoreless innings. The only good thing that came out of Canada’s “performance.”
  5. Adam Jones’ catch and Giancarlo Stanton’s homer. Mercy!

Also giving an honourable mention to Marcus Stroman for his outstanding outing in the first DR/USA match.

Enjoy the semifinals!

I’m still in shock.

I don’t need to tell you how awful the news was. I don’t need to tell you about the ramifications. I don’t need to tell you how Stro’s injury affects everyone and everything.

So, there’s options: Norris, Sanchez, Estrada, Albers, Francis (eek), Santana (yikes).

I’d pick Norris and Sanchez for the final two spots. Good potential and looked good last season. I had Sanchez pegged for the bullpen; even got into a Twitter debate about that on Sunday. But things have changed and possibly, so has Sanchez’s role with the team.

Of course, there’s always the possibility of a trade. That would be helpful for Dioner Navarro. But I doubt a trade will take place.

So…take a deep breath. These are the cards that have been dealt to the Jays. Unfortunately, they will have to play without their most promising starter.
