Re. Tulo/Reyes

July 28, 2015

So I woke up this morning and discovered the Blue Jays acquired five-time all-star and two-time gold glove winner, Troy Tulowitzki. Once again, AA throws a breaking ball that no one saw coming. Here’s my two cents on the trade:

Tulo – Definitely an upgrade at the shortstop position. We all know what he’s capable of at the plate. In 87 games with the Rockies this season, Tulo is batting .300 and has an OPS of .818. Yes, his health concerns me, but Tulo’s production drowns out that fear.

LeTroy Hawkins – He’s a serviceable reliever. His career numbers are decent and his output the last few seasons was pretty good. His veteran presence will be very helpful for Aaron Sanchez and Roberto Osuna.

Jose Reyes –  There were things I liked about Reyes and there were things that rubbed me the wrong way. I loved his persona and speed; a good fit for the leadoff spot. His defense was becoming a concern and I always cringed when he swung at the first pitch.  He also lost a chuck of time due to injuries.

Reyes was a great player, who wasn’t as great as he was with the New York Mets. Sadly, he may fall into the same category as Phil Kessel: Put up good numbers, but not good enough to satisfy high expectations and the salary he was earning.

Hoffman, Castro, Tinoco – They’ll either become all-stars or complete busts. There’s no way of knowing for sure.

Overall, it’s a good trade. I love the addition of Tulo! However, they still need a starter. Here’s hoping AA makes another move before Friday’s deadline.
